CITY WEDDINGS

Planning a City Wedding

As well all know, Colorado is most well-known for its majestic mountains. The Rocky Mountain region comprises more than half of the state’s total area, but probably more like ninety-nine percent of what people imagine when they think of the Centennial State. Believe it or not, city weddings in Colorado are a thing too!

There are a few good reasons to consider having a city wedding in Colorado, most of which have to do with travel for guests coming in from out of town. Weather in the high Rockies can be unpredictable throughout all four months of the year. In fact, we photographed a wedding in Breckenridge on the summer solstice a few years ago and it snowed. So, if you’re having a lot of guests who aren’t accustomed to driving in the mountains, having a wedding on the front range (e.g., Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, etc.) might be worth considering.

In addition to weather, the thin air at high elevations can be difficult to cope with if you’re not used to it. This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t have a mountain wedding, but if you do, make sure to encourage your family and friends to drink water in abundance and alcohol in moderation. Altitude sickness is no joke!

We’ve been shooting city weddings in Colorado (and all over the United States) since we started J. La Plante Photo way back in 2008. While we’ve always shot the majority of our wedding in the mountains, city weddings offer a unique alternative and change of pace that allows us to flex creative muscles we don’t get to use too often. These days, we shoot two or three city weddings in Colorado per year and we always welcome the opportunity.

Below, you’ll find a selection of our favorite city weddings from over the years. Feel free to browse and, as always, reach out to us directly if you have any questions or would like to check availability for your wedding date!

Mile High Station Wedding

It’s been a while since we’ve had a Mile High Station wedding, A lot has changed in the world since our last time there. Gay marriage was legalized in the US, we lived through a pandemic that drastically cut wedding lists, and we’ve since captured another 150 weddings. The world looks different and weddings look…

Blanc Denver Wedding

While I understand that it’s tradition to get ready separately on a wedding day (for reasons ancient and bizarre), I’ve always felt that it creates artificial jitters. After all, this tradition takes you away from your person. The one you lock eyes with across the room to share an inside joke with a mere look….

If there’s one word to describe Bobbie Sue and Grant’s Denver Athletic Club Wedding, it would be: Character. As Bobbie Sue explained in her vows, a wedding she attended as a young girl put her on the path that led her to Grant. A man at this wedding was the life of the party and…

Pinery Colorado Springs Wedding

There are a lot of “typical” things you could do at your wedding. You could follow all the trends in wedding magazines and blogs. You could get married in the summer. You could wear a white dress. You could walk down the aisle to Pachelbel’s Canon in D. Or you could adopt Lindsey and Fernando’s…

Garden of the Gods Wedding

Anya and Ben’s Garden of the Gods wedding was so epic, it couldn’t be contained to a single day or location. Instead, we joined the couple and their guests for three days of partying at the Garden of the Gods Resort and the Pinery, both with equally beautiful – but vastly different – views of Colorado Springs.

Wellshire Event Center Wedding

As with many celebrations this year, this Wellshire Event Center wedding was a long time in the making. In being by Cortney and Justin’s side as they first went through planning an entire wedding, then making the difficult choice to postpone it, and then picking up with the planning again, one thing was very clear…

Denver Clock Tower Wedding

A lot of people right now are going on and on about knowing that a couple is good together by how much grace they’ve had while planning a pandemic wedding. That’s true, to an extent. But after watching Hanna and Dan’s Denver Clock Tower wedding, I’ve found a much better measure. I discovered this during…

Pinery at the Hill Wedding

If you think about it, the odds of finding your soulmate, out of the 7.5 billion+ people on this planet, are slim to none. In fact, someone did the math and it turns out that, “…you would find true love only in one lifetime out of 10,000.” I’m usually pretty scientifically minded, but Melissa and…
