How to Plan for Weather on Your Wedding Day

Colorado is an awesome place for so many reasons, I can’t even count them. Not the least of which is the fact that, at high elevations, you can experience all four seasons during any given month. And while Colorado’s fickle weather certainly keeps things interesting, it also adds an extra dimension to your wedding planning process, especially if you’re planning a mountain wedding. But we’re here to help! Here are a few quick suggestions for how to plan for weather on your wedding day so that you don’t get washed away if a storm comes rolling through.

How to plan for weather on your wedding day | Provide Transportation

At really high elevations, it can snow any month of the year. Trust us, we’ve seen over an inch of the white stuff during a Summer Solstice wedding. Also, driving in the mountains can be tricky, especially if you’re not used to doing so. Add a fresh layer of snow or ice to that and it can spell trouble. If you’re having friends and family coming in from out of state, consider providing a shuttle service to take your wedding guests to your ceremony and then back to their hotels after the reception.

There are lots of great event transportation companies in Colorado. Here are just a few:

Epic Mountain Express
Mountain Wedding Shuttle
Brewhop Trolley

Planning for weather on your wedding day | Have a backup location

The vast majority of Colorado wedding ceremonies are held outdoors, and for good reason! Colorado is one of the most beautiful places on Planet Earth, so why would you want to be cooped up inside the wedding venue?

When searching for wedding venues, be sure to ask if they have a backup location in the case of inclement weather. A lot of venues in Colorado have some sort of pavilion or outdoor structure on site, so you can still have an outdoorsy feel without getting wet if a storm moves in.

Here are a few of our favorites that fit the bill:

Planet Bluegrass
Sanctuary Golf Course

Wedding planning for weather | Rent a tent

If your venue doesn’t have a backup location, or if the backup location is indoors and you really have your heart set on an outdoor wedding ceremony, you can always rent a tent (or something similar) so that you can still get married outside regardless of what the weather has in store.

Most companies rent standard white tents that you’ve probably seen a thousand times, but there are also handful that specialize in a more unique selection of products. We’d recommend starting your search with these folks:

Under the Sky Event Rental
Event Rents
Colorado Party Rentals

How to plan for weather on your wedding day | Embrace bad weather

Now that you’ve read this far, I have a quick confession: as wedding photographers, we love crazy weather. I mean, yeah, the logistical hurdles it creates can be a pain in the ass, but at the same time, rain, snow, lightning, wind and so forth make for some truly epic wedding photos.

If it rains or snows on your wedding day, you’re in for a treat. Not many couples get a super cool backlit nighttime portrait in a snowstorm, so if it happens to you, you’ll be a part of a pretty exclusive club.

Plus, we all know that saying about rain on your wedding day being a good omen. I’m not too superstitious myself, but the power of suggestion is a compelling thing!

Wedding planning for weather | Relax and Breathe

The serenity prayer should be your mantra on your wedding day, not only when it comes to weather, but for everything else that will inevitably go “wrong” as well. Especially the bit about not worrying about things you can’t change.

The weather is going to do what it wants to do on your wedding day whether you like it or not, so you might as well put a big smile on your face and focus on the positives. Like the fact that you’re marrying the one person on Earth who you love most.

That’s a pretty cool feeling and one that a little moisture will never be able to dampen!
